Yesterday when I was looking for inspirational quotes to include in my weekly newsletter. I came across this:
“Believe in yourself and in your own voice, because there will be times in this business when you will be the only one who does. Take heart from the knowledge that an author with a strong voice will often have trouble at the start of his or her career because strong, distinctive voices sometimes make editors nervous. But in the end, only the strong survive.” – Jayne Ann Krentz.
It’s easy to have doubts about our writing. I have them all the time – I’ve had them recently about a story I’ve been commissioned to write by a well known Literary Magazine. I’m having them now as I begin a new novel. I try hard to put myself in the position of the editor or the reader – will they want to read this I ask, is it good enough etc etc? In the end, as long as we work hard to improve what we do and be the very best we can, we MUST believe in ourselves and our own voice and not be afraid.
‘To write something, you have to risk making a fool of yourself.’ – Anne Rice
My weekly newsletter is free. Each week it includes information about competitions or opportunities for publication, as well as an extract from my book on writing which I’ll be publishing next year and tips and inspirations. One subscriber recently e mailed me a lovely message saying how she appreciated the newsletter and how she often printed it out and took it into her writer’s group. I loved that and I love writing the newsletter as it makes me feel a part of the wider community of writers.
If you would like to receive it in your inbox on Mondays – you can sign up on the right. Your e mail is safe with me!
