A bumper list of competitions which I hope will inspire you before the end of 2016! They are mostly short story competitions but poetry, novel, novella and playwriting are included.

The 2017 Bristol Short Story Prize is open until midnight (BST) May 3rd 2017. Stories may be on any theme or subject. Entry Fee: £8

Prizes: £1,000, £700, £400. There are 17 further prizes of £100 for each of the shortlisted writers. 20 stories will be shortlisted and published in Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 10.

The Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition closes on December 18. Open to stories for children/young adults aged between 7-18 (max 80,000 words).

The Fresher Writing Prize is now open until January 5, 2017 – short story, novel, creative non-fiction, poetry and flash fiction categories.

The prizes vary but include personal advice and feedback from a literary agent, an editorial director from a major publishing company and an independent publisher.The shortlisted entries will be published in an anthology and the authors will be special guests at the anthology’s launch and Fresher Writing Awards, held at Bournemouth University on May 18.

We are looking for novellas between 2o,ooo and 50,000 words in length from UK authors who have not yet had a full-length work published. The Soundwork Short Story Competition is free to enter and closes on December 31st.

The National Memory Day Creative Writing Competition invites short story and poetry entries on the theme of Memories. Deadline: 5pm 20th January 2017.

Prizes: £4000 each to the winner of the best poem and best short story. Plymouth University Best Young Writer aged 15-18 Award: £2000. Best Primary Carer Voice Award: £2000.

Entry fee: £3 for the first entry and £2 for all subsequent entries. All funds raised by the competition will be reinvested in the National Memory Day projects to benefit more people living with memory loss, to support new writing talent and creativity in the UK, and to support dementia and Alzheimer’s research. Little Pieces of Gold, a theatre company dedicated to new writing is looking for short plays which capture the theme of keeping hopes and dreams alive. (deadline 5th December) So plays about second chances, moving on and opportunities for change. Stories could be set within the personal or domestic realm or address wider political, societal or environmental concerns. A shortlist will be published a few days after the deadline and selected plays will be cast and fully rehearsed by our directing team. MORE HERE
